Use Intermittent Fasting to Lose Weight

Going without food for most of the day or even for several days is a challenge that fortunately we are very capable of meeting! Majority of people are actually using it to lose weight – it is called fasting.

Specifically, weight-watchers are using intermittent fasting – the practice of occasionally going for short periods without eating. Fasting for short periods helps people consume fewer calories. It also helps enhance the ability of some hormones that regulate weight control to work at best. When done properly, intermittent fasting may help keep body weight in check, regulate blood sugar, control cholesterol, and more.

Ways of Doing Intermittent Fasting

There are various ways of doing intermittent fasting, from daily skipping breakfast, eating every other day to limiting caloric intake to say 500 calories on two days of the week, but eating normally the other 5 days.

Whichever type of fasting you settle for, one thing’s for sure, intermittent fasting can lead to reduced calorie intake and significant weight loss, including belly fat. So long as one doesn’t compensate by eating more during the non-fasting periods.

Intermittent Fasting Affects Your Hormones

Short-term fasting enhances the body’s fat burning capabilities by affecting certain hormones. For instance, Insulin increases when we eat. But when we fast it is much reduced. Lower insulin levels accelerate fat burning. Human growth hormone (HGH) supports fat loss and muscle gain. Fasting increases its levels in the body thus enhancing its functions.

Boosts Metabolism

Studies have shown that fasting for about 48 hours boosts metabolism by 3 -14%. Caution should be observed however as longer fasting periods can overwhelm metabolism.

Fewer Calories

The main reason intermittent fasting works for weight loss is one eats fewer calories. Skipping meal equals eating fewer calories; so long as one doesn’t compensate and pack back the calories during the eating periods. Many studies show that it can help you lose weight and belly fat.

Retains Muscle

One of the worst side effects of dieting is that the body is inclined to burn muscle as well as fat. However, studies have shown that intermittent fasting can help you hold on to more muscle mass than when doing a normal dieting that involves calorie restriction.
